New Rodent Poison Virtually Untreatable.

Dogs and cats are often seen at our hospital for ingesting different kinds of poisons.  Some of these are worse than others, but a new type, called bromethalin, is becoming more available.  Bromethalin is the active ingredient in Assault, Fastrac, Gladiator, Rampage, Talpirid, and Vengeance, to name a few.  It causes brain and spinal cord swelling characterized by weakness, incoordination, seizures, paralysis and death.  There are no tests available to detect bromethalin exposure, and even worse, there are no known antidotes.  Supportive care and detoxification are implemented, but brain damage can occur quickly.  This is a poison to avoid if at all possible.
